This is where writing the screenplay for Running with Scissors began to take physical form. This is the board. And every post-it note represents a scene. And those pink post-its - they are the must-have beats for this young-adult, coming-of-age movie. These are the humble origins of every blockbuster you have ever watched. They all start in some sort of cluttered office with a storyteller sorting through the plot, the characters, and the journey they are about to embark upon together.
From the outside, the movie business looks glamorous. On this inside... it's work - a lot of work. But if you love inspiring and entertaining people with great stories., then it may be the most fun you ever have at work. And since the idea for Running with Scissors popped into my mind a couple of years ago, it has been a labor of love.
The idea rolled around in my brain for several months before I finally began to outline and give it form. But when I took it to the board to beat it out, well, that's when things really took off. Once I had a completed board, I knew I had a full story for a feature length film. But what would others think of this crazy idea?
As a writer there is always a bit of apprehension when first presenting your work to others. In this case, it took me a few months before I presented the story outline to my fellow producers and story tellers, Jerry and Mary. But when I pitched them the idea, their immediate response was "Let's do it!" And that gave me the confidence to keep going. The idea must have been decent because I'm a pretty lousy when it comes to pitching an idea. And from there we were off.
Fast forward through hours upon hours of writing the script, and we finally have something we can work with. And now that story gets turned over to the director, actors, and editor to all put their own artistic mark on the story and make it their own. Stay tuned for more of the journey of the making of Running with Scissors.
